Mt. Asakusadake: a beautiful mountain which has snow even in summer
Mt. Asakusadake is located on the border between Fukushima Prefecture’s Tadami and Niigata Prefecture. At an altitude of 1586m, it is a popular mountain for the beautiful scene of residual snow at the peak even in summer. You can see its grand appearance from Tagokura Dam, a huge dam that boasts one of Japan’s foremost hydroelectric facilities. For Mt. Asakusadake, the climbing season ranges from the mountain’s opening in June to the end of October. The wonderful view of the dynamic precipice with its series of rocky crags that make up Mt. Onigatsurayama, and the large & small marshes of the wetlands make for great visual highlights. At the summit, you can encounter the beautiful landscape of highland flora and the surrounding mountains such as Mt. Kemou.
Mt. Aizu-Asahidake: The superb view at the top
The medium-height Mt. Aizu-Asahidake that is symbolic of Aizu is in the middle of a mountain range including Mt. Hiuchigatake and Mt. Mitsuiwadake. It is famous as a peak for its fresh greenery and mountain plants, but it is certainly a fairly difficult mountain for climbers. But there are a shelter and a mountain trail provided. Above all else though, the lovely beech forests, the view from the steep cliffs created from avalanches, the bunches of rhododendron, and the view overlooking the grand nature of Tadami from the summit are so amazing that they just grab the hearts of climbers and never let go.
Mt. Gamoudake: the Matterhorn of Aizu
At an altitude of 828m, Mt. Gamoudake is a small mountain compared to Mt. Asakusadake and Mt. Aizu-Asahidake. However, its pointed appearance and the view from its peak have earned the mountain the nickname of the Matterhorn of Aizu. It should be noted that this is not a mountain for beginners since ropes and chains are needed to traverse the steep slopes. But you can also view the mountain from the windows on the trains of the Tadami Line and from the national road. From the peak, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, and the view of the Tadami River and Mt. Asakusadake is something not to be missed.
