About

The highest tower from which to view Goryokaku and Hakodate

The observation deck of Goryokaku Tower is one of the recommended places to view Hakodate which is famous for the beauty of its nightscape. From there, you can enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Goryokaku which is known for its star-shaped fort, the streets of Hakodate, Tsugaru Strait, the Yokotsu Mountains and other features. The scenery during the daytime is also wonderful, but the nighttime illumination and the turning off of the lights are especially recommended. During the Goryokaku Dream Illumination which first started in 1989, the moat around Goryokaku Fort is decorated with 2000 lights so that the star-shaped fort seems to float on a sea of lights. At this time, the first floor inside the tower is also decorated in lights, and with a Five-Point Star Dream Tree set up, the entire tower is enveloped in a relaxing warm light. Furthermore, there are events held throughout the year so whenever you visit the tower, you can feel that particular season.

Learn about the history of Goryokaku, a Special Historic Site

While enjoying the scenery, also deepen your knowledge about Goryokaku. On the observation deck, there is a gallery known as the Goryokaku History Corridor which introduces the history of the fort. The tower itself was constructed with a motif thoroughly sharing the star-shaped design of Goryokaku right down to the cross-section of the tower.

Take a stroll through Goryokaku Park

Goryokaku, which has been nationally designated as a Special Historic Site, was a Western-style fortress constructed as a government office for the Edo shogunate, and is known as a prominent tourist spot in Hakodate. Currently, it is a relaxation space full of nature for many people as Goryokaku Park. It is additionally known for its cherry blossoms in spring, and in April, Yoshino cherries blossom everywhere. Spend an enjoyable time at the park which is filled with highlights such as the historical buildings, cherry trees and the winter illumination.
