Hakodate Orthodox Church

Japan’s first Russian Orthodox church in a city with an exotic atmosphere

The church had been first erected in 1860 but burned down in 1907 after which the current structure was built in 1916. The Russian Byzantine-style church has been nationally recognized as an Important Cultural Property and the sound of its bell has been inducted as one of the Top 100 Soundscapes of Japan.
