A giant kokeshi welcomes you to a museum specializing in the famous Japanese kokeshi doll!

The Japan Kokeshi Museum focuses on the traditional handicraft of the Naruko area, the kokeshi doll. Beginning with a collection of 600 exhibits by poet and writer of children’s stories, Kaname Fukazawa, there are also other displays including kokeshi dolls donated by famous people. You can also view the creation of kokeshi by artisans and even try your hand at painting some of them.

Interesting Japanese dolls
Visiting this museum for me was more interesting for knowing more about Japanese culture and traditional toys, rather than because I am interested in kokeshi themselves. There are really many different types of kokeshi, and they are all hand-made which makes each of them so unique.
