Kyoto 1 Day Itinerary (To-ji, Hongan-ji, Kyoto Imperial Palace,Nijo Castle)

Starting from Kyoto Station, this tour encompasses the temples and popular tourist spots in the central area of the city. Beginning with To-ji Temple where its five-storied pagoda has become a symbol of Kyoto, the tour continues through World Heritage sites including Hongan-ji (Nishi Hongan-ji) and Nijo Castle, and then through the essential spots such as Kyoto Imperial Palace.

Toji (Kyo-o-gokokuji)

Toji (Kyo-o-gokokuji)
Built in 794, it’s known as Japan’s first temple for esoteric Buddhism. The three-dimensional mandala within the auditorium visually expressing the world of esoteric Buddhism is incredible. The five-storied pagoda which has become a symbol of Kyoto also cannot be missed. On the 21st of each month, the flea market “Kobo-san” is held where over a thousand stalls sell things such as antiques and old clothes.

Hongan-ji Temple
The temple is within easy walking distance from Kyoto Station. Generally known as Nishi Hongan-ji, visitors can see grand National Treasures on its wide grounds such as the 25m-tall Amitabha temple hall and the 29m-tall Goeido. If you have time, also visit the nearby Higashi Hongan-ji.

Kyoto Tower, which rises in front of Kyoto Station, measures 100m high and is popular for being the tallest structure in Kyoto. You can get a 360-degree panoramic view of the city. Also, you will be able to get a taste of the distinct Kyoto geography surrounded by the mountains as you search for the scenic historic sites in the city. To get ready for the afternoon part of the tour, taking a lunch break in the area of the station is good.

This is the palace where generations of emperors lived between the 14th and 19th centuries. Nijo Castle

A castle that was built in 1601 during the Edo Era. Following the end of the Edo shogunate in the 19th century, it served as the Imperial villa for a while. At Ninomaru Palace (a National Treasure), you can view the traditional samurai style of architecture, the Japanese sliding screen images done in the Kano style reflecting grand beauty, and the Ninomaru Garden which was designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

Called “Hanamachi”, this is an area overflowing with the feeling of Kyoto as geisha and maiko (junior geisha) flock here. Restaurants and bars are located along the Kamogawa River which flows through Kyoto. Going from sunset into night, the ancient townscape is illuminated so the area is recommended to spend some time in the brilliantly lit area.
