A facility which brings together all of Kumamoto’s traditional crafts. There are also plenty of attractions including exhibition and sales of works by artisans who change weekly. You can also pick up and purchase these rare articles specific to Kumamoto.
Visit Kumamoto Castle which has a history of 400 years and is famous for being one of Japan’s three major castles. Enjoy a walk while viewing its dignified and grand appearance.
*Due to the earthquake in 2016, a majority of the castle is undergoing reconstruction. Currently, the interior of the castle cannot be toured.
Located within Kumamoto Castle, you can easily see the castle from this point. Late 16th-century military commander Kiyomasa Kato who constructed the castle and helped develop the castle town is enshrined here.
This is the site of a samurai residence that was moved to the outermost area of Kumamoto Castle. You can see the exquisite architecture and the garden for this nationally famous former residence of a high-ranking samurai. And in November, you can also admire the beautiful scenery of the autumn colors.
*The residence is currently under reconstruction due to the 2016 earthquake so touring is not possible at this time.
The castle town along the road where samurai warriors once headed to the castle has been restored. Famous stores within Kumamoto Prefecture are all here and you can enjoy local dishes and souvenir shopping. If you have some time, you can even drop by the historical cultural experience facility, Wakuwaku-za.
