Kanagawa 1 Day Itinerary (Odawara & Yugawara)

Take a walk through Odawara, an area originally built up around a castle which can be reached from Tokyo by regular train in about 1 hour or in about 40 minutes by Bullet Train. In the afternoon, head for Yugawara, an onsen village associated with some legendary authors. Relax through a nature walk and a day-trip onsen.

Prospering during the Warring States Era at the end of the 15th century, Odawara Castle was known as an impregnable fortress. See the historic sites including the restored castle tower and take a walk in the park while admiring the seasonal flowers. On the 1st floor of the Honmaru Plaza/Tokiwagi Gate in the Odawara Castle Information Center, you can enjoy taking souvenir photos while trying on costumes of samurai warriors and ninja of the Warring States Era.

Yugawara Onsen

The onsen village can be reached in about 10 minutes by bus from Yugawara Station. It is known for having been visited by many writers such as Junichiro Tanizaki and Soseki Natsume. Enjoy a light stroll in the area which includes places such as Manyo Park and an art museum. There are also facilities where you can take a bath on a day trip or even stay overnight. Relax in this historic village surrounded by the sea and mountains.

Paintings by Japanese artists who have a connection with Yugawara are on display. Another attraction is the adjacent Reiji Hiramatsu Hall where the works of Reiji Hiramatsu, the leading figure in contemporary Japanese painting, are exhibited along with paintings that illustrate the scenery of Yugawara. You can also take a break in the cafeteria.

This is a park associated with the Man’yōshū, a compilation of Japanese poetry ranging from the 7th to 8th centuries. Have a nature walk while enjoying the flow of the rivers and waterfalls. You will want to take in the scenery of the historic sites mixed in with the natural environment within the park.

A footbath facility located at one end of Manyo Park. You can enjoy 9 types of onsen using the waters from Yugawara. Each of the baths has its own different benefits helping the eyes, ears and internal organs. Doppo-no-Yu is ideal for soothing away any aching feet after a whole day of walking.

Soak in a genuine outdoor bath. Kogome-no-Yu which is located close to Manyo Park is an onsen facility for day-trip use. Enjoy the hot spring while admiring the woods. There is also a free lounge and a restaurant where you can have that meal and a post-bath beer while relaxing.
