Enshrining the god of scholarship, this is the head shrine for 12,000 shrines in the country. Walk through the shrine grounds surrounded by the lush natural woods and view the precious historical landmarks including the shrine buildings of the Momoyama Era which have been splendidly ornamented. Along the sando path to the shrine which is lined with shops from the Dazaifu Station area, you can sample famous brands of wagashi confections such as umegaemochi. After exploring Dazaifu Tenmangu, take the train from Dazaifu Station along the Nishi-Nippon Railroad (abbreviated as Nishitetsu) to Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station.

Tenjin’s underground shopping complex is known as a major commercial center in Hakata with approximately 150 stores along its passageways directly connecting to the station. The Tenjin area has many shops selling specialties such as Hakata ramen so it is suggested to stop by there for lunch.

Head for Ōhori Park which has been a favorite place in central Hakata for the local citizens to relax. Take a stroll through the large park which centers around a pond. By all means, also visit the Japanese-style garden at the south end of the park.

Go next to Kushida Shrine which is admired by citizens as the local Shinto deity protecting Hakata. Stop by to pray for good health as the shrine provides good fortune in youth and long life. Nearby there is a historic commercial district, Kawabata Shopping Arcade where you can have an enjoyable walk while feeling the old-fashioned lifestyle of the residents.

Hakata’s famous landmarks at night are the yatai. These food stalls are located all throughout the city but the ones in Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata are the most famous. The small stands are all lined up and serve down-home and delicious local dishes including motsunabe, ramen and yakitori.
