About

A Place of Scenic Beauty with a deeply-indented shoreline boasting a natural beauty

The Goishi Coast which is a part of Sanriku Fukko National Park along the southern area of the Sanriku Coast continues for 6km, and is a beautiful tourist region with its picturesque scenery of a complex deeply-indented shoreline. The distinct rock formations of the Sanriku Coast that jut out into the sea provide a dynamic view, and features such as the beach of polished stones that can only be seen along Goishi Coast give an enjoyable natural formative beauty due to the topography that has been gradually created since the ancient past. The nature trail is filled with the distinct air of a Japanese coastline where a forest of red pine continues along. With the cherry blossoms of spring, lavender in summer, and a scenery of flowers such as camellia that can be seen from winter to spring, the elegant landscape of the Goishi Coast is even more prominently realized. Along with enjoying the view on the nature trail, you can enjoy an ideal time at the nearby campground, an information office and a rest house.

Many scenic spots with their own character all over Goishi Coast

The picturesque scenery that represents Goishi Coast, Anatoshi-iso, is a rock formation that seems to float atop the sea consisting of three mysterious holes created from seawater erosion. Another example of superb scenery, Ranbodani, consists of cliffs that soar more than 30m in height which have been acutely eroded by seawater. Kaminari-iwa, a giant rock located on the south side has a cave through which the waves coming in sound like thunder. For this reason, the sound has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Soundscapes. Since the 2011 Earthquake, it is said that the sound isn’t quite as prominent as before, but it still remains as beautiful as ever. Also, there are many more examples of wonderful scenery to enjoy such as Goishi Beach with its black gravel polished smooth from the action of waves.
