Witness the ecology of animals from various angles
The sky oasis of the Sunshine Aquarium is located on the rooftop of the 40m-high World Import Mart Building in the middle of the metropolis. The 1st floor of the aquarium can be enjoyed as a stroll through the ocean with the theme of a sea tour as you are able to see marine animals living their lives. You can encounter a water tank that has recreated a coral reef environment, an arch-shaped tank where buoyant jellyfish swim and even a giant ocean sunfish. The aquarium’s 2nd floor has the theme of a waterside tour where you can observe animals such as frogs, snakes and turtles which live in environments such as rivers, lakes and ocean shores. There is also a beautiful tank which has recreated the Great Barrier Reef with displays of the popular clownfish, sea anemones and seals residing in the lake. In the outdoor Marine Garden which has the theme of a sky tour, a unique space spreads out with palm trees on top of the skyscraper, and it’s there where you can meet up with pelicans, penguins, seals, otters and other animals. At the big highlight of Japan’s first overhead donut-shaped water tank known as the Sunshine Aqua Ring, you can witness the sight of seals swimming about as if they were flying over the capital.
Don’t miss out on the seal show and feeding time
There are also daily shows with well-coordinated performances between seals and trainers, underwater performances where divers go into the large water tanks and introduce the animals via microphone, and feeding time of the Cape penguins. As well, there is also a similar feeding time for the pelicans, a viewing of the African small-clawed otter as you see it strolling along, and an observation tour of the backyard (admission required) which usually cannot be accessed. Finally within the aquarium, there is also a souvenir shop and a café with that South Seas mood.
