Travel plan for first timers in Kanazawa

Many historic sites remain in Kanazawa, the old capital where the rich samurai culture blossomed. Naturally one of the highlights of Kanazawa tourism is Kenroku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan but you should also check out Omi-cho Market, the treasure box of Kanazawa food.

Take a stroll through Higashi Chaya which is known for its townscape retaining the grace of the Edo Era. In addition to the old miso stores, rice shops, and teahouses serving wagashi confections, you can also visit places dealing in the traditional folkcraft of Kanazawa such as gold leaf and the kaga yuzen art of dyeing fabrics. Board the Loop Bus heading onto the Right Loop (RL) for Kenroku-en and Kanazawa Castle Park and get off at the stop for Kenroku-en/Kanazawa Castle.

Visit Kenroku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and stroll through the garden of a feudal lord which took years to complete. Afterwards, head over to Kanazawa Castle Park. The grounds are so big that you will want to pick and choose your highlights when moving about. Since there are many restaurants around Kenroku-en, lunch is convenient. Board the Loop Bus heading onto the RL to go to the Nagamachi Samurai District and get off at the stop for Korinbo.

Just 5 minutes’ walk from the commercial area of Korinbo will get you to the atmospheric samurai district. Take a walk along the row of houses where the samurai of the Edo Era lived. Board the Loop Bus heading onto the RL to go to Omi-cho Market or take the transit bus bound for Kanazawa Station and get off at the stop for Musashigatsuji/Omi-cho Market.
