About

Also ideal for snorkeling

The beach known for having the most beautiful ocean is located in the port town of Isso at the northern tip of Yakushima. Cradled by Cape Yahazu into a bay, it is a quiet beach of lovely natural sand and lapping waves. Yakushima mostly faces open sea leading to high waves, but here at Isso Beach, you can enjoy a good swim without worrying. Sea turtles come ashore between late May and July to lay their eggs so the beach is only open for swimming from late July into August. The water is extremely clear and among the huge coral reefs, colorful tropical fish swim about, and if you are fortunate, there are even diving spots where you can catch the sight of sea turtles swimming by. To the left of the parking area is the white sandy shore while to the right is the rocky area which is ideal as a place for snorkeling. There are complete washroom, showering and changeroom facilities for free, and in the summer, beach huts go up so that you can indulge in a menu that includes curry, drinks and shaved ice. Since snorkels and swim rings are also available for rental, you can easily enjoy a swim in the ocean.

Neighboring tourist spots

Near the beach is the coffee shop Isso Coffee, the 40m-high Nunobiki Falls, and with a short drive, Oura Onsen which has a wonderful view of some high cliffs. There is a lighthouse at the northernmost point of Cape Yahazu, and from the tip of the cape, you can get a 270-degree view of the vast ocean especially during sunrise and sunset.  There is also a cave shrine in Mt. Yahazu.
