Experience art at Japan’s first outdoor art museum
The park, which is Japan’s first outdoor art museum, was opened in 1969 with the goal of making sculpture art more popular. Approximately 120 sculptural masterpieces are on permanent display across the huge sculpture park. These works of art can be enjoyed while viewing the mountains of Hakone. Calmly walking among nature while enjoying famous sculptures up-close is a real thrill that is unique to the outdoor art museum. There are also play sculptures that children can touch and have fun with, and other features that the whole family can enjoy, such as the maze.
Five all-weather indoor exhibitions
There are five indoor exhibitions at The Hakone Open-Air Museum in addition to the outdoor sculpture displays. Zig-Zag △ (triangular) World was opened in 2014 as a space for families to enjoy. Learn about the natural world using play equipment and shape art based on the work of American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Approximately 300 of Picasso’s ceramic works, which he started working on at the age of 65, can be viewed at the Picasso Pavilion. In the Green Gallery, the Medardo Rosso collection and the Henry Moore collection are on permanent display. Displays that change season-by-season can be enjoyed in the Multi Hall and the Main Gallery. An English audio guide is available.
