Horyuji temple is one of the most favorite place in Japan. (Actually I love Nara more than Kyoto, much quieter.) I enjoyed a peaceful walk all day. There's no deer, but have excellently well-conserved oldest architecture. If you love Japanese old temples, you can't miss Nara.
