Wakayama 1 Day Itinerary (Wakayama Castle, Nishinomaru Garden, Kuroshio Market,Ki-Mii-dera Temple)

Tour the scenic and historic sites within the city of Wakayama. Visit the city’s symbolic Wakayama Castle and watch the famous show of trimming a tuna for a meal. Then in the afternoon, head to Ki-Mii-dera Temple which is visited by pilgrims as the second temple along the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage.

This is the castle of the Kii Tokugawa clan which was second to the family of the Tokugawa shogun within the “Gosanke” (The Three Houses of the Tokugawa). A symbol of the city of Wakayama, it is a place of rest for its citizens. From the highest part of the castle tower, there is a panoramic view of the Kinokawa River and the city.

Nishinomaru Garden (Momijidani Garden)
An early Edo Era daimyo garden with a design utilizing the mountainside and the natural spring water. Located near the castle tower of Wakayama Castle, enjoy a walk through the garden and have some matcha tea at the teahouse. The autumn after the end of November provides some wonderful scenery.

When it comes to Wakayama, maguro tuna is famous. For lunch, head for Kuroshio Market, known as the theme park for maguro. The performance of the cutting and trimming of freshly-harvested tuna is popular. You can sample various other types of seafood besides maguro through sashimi, sushi, barbeque, etc.

Visit the 1200-year-old Ki-Mii-dera Temple. The splendid view from the top of the 231 steps on the temple grounds is famous. Japan’s largest golden 1000-armed Kannon that was built in 2008 also cannot be missed.
