A large leisure facility with a spreading rich green forest
The government-managed park consists of a lush green zone which covers an area of 180ha near Nishi-Tachikawa Station which can be reached via the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku Station within 30 minutes. In 1983, as a part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Emperor Hirohito’s reign, Showa Kinen Park was built to provide a large public space and cultural activities enveloped by plenty of green trees under the theme of “Green Recovery and Improvement in Human Nature”. Within the park, all sorts of flora can be seen and enjoyed throughout all four seasons with cherry blossoms and tulips in spring, hydrangea and sunflowers in summer, cosmos and the changing colors in the fall, and plum in winter.
Many facilities to enjoy and exercise the body
There are also many facilities for children to enjoy such as the Children’s Forest which has the Sea of Clouds Bouncing Dome, the largest facility of its kind in Japan covering 1,600㎡ with 2 large trampolines, the country’s biggest hammock, the Misty Forest and other kid-friendly facilities making use of natural materials such as wood and bamboo making for a play area that is something different from the usual park. Rainbow Pool which is only open during the summer is a leisure pool facility consisting of 9 pools covering an area of 63,000m2 which is the largest in the Tokyo area. These facilities include the Water Slide, the Running Water Pool, the Wave Pool and a shallow pool for small children. There are also many other facilities to be enjoyed by kids and grownups alike including cycling for a total distance of 14km via rental bicycles, boating on the 51,000m2 pond, disc golfing, barbequing in the Barbeque Garden, a dog park and a Japanese garden. There are also free rentals of baby carts and nursing rooms, 3 cafés, 3 restaurants and 7 shops.
