A long time ago, the natural topography of gas, hot mud and boiling water was feared as something from Hell. But now, it is a popular tourist site as picturesque scenery of an unusual natural hot spring. Among the 7 Hells, visit the four which have been nationally designated as Places of Scenic Beauty: Umi Jigoku, Shiraike Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku and Tatsumaki Jigoku.
Have your lunch by dining on jigoku-steamed dishes in which the ingredients are steamed by the high-temperature gases emanating from the onsen. At Kannawa, there are shops where you can sample many such dishes. “Jigoku Mushi Kobo” and “Chinetsu Kanko Labo Enma” are particularly popular places.
