Nara 1 Day Itinerary (The Ruins of Heijō-kyō, Yakushi-ji Temple, Tōshōdai-ji Temple)

The tour begins from the ruins of Heijo Palace whose restoration is continuing amid investigative research after having been discovered to be around 1300 years old. In the afternoon, the tour continues through Yakushi-ji and Tōshōdai-ji Temples with a visit of World Heritage sites with a grand history that began between the 7th and 8th centuries.

The former site of the Imperial Castle that is estimated to have been constructed during the Nara Era (circa 710). It has been registered as a World Heritage site as one of the cultural properties of the ancient capital of Nara. Currently, excavation, investigative research and building restoration are in progress. Walk through the wide grounds of the ruins of Heijo Palace and observe the restored Daigokuden (Great Hall of State), Tōin Teien (East Palace Garden) and Suzuakumon (Suzaku Gate). To head for Yakushi-ji Temple in the afternoon, it’s recommended to go from Kintetsu Railway’s Yamato-Saidaiji Station. Having lunch here is also recommended since there are many restaurants around the station.

Yakushi-ji Temple

Yakushi-ji Temple
This is a World Heritage site temple that has more than 1300 years of history. Yakushi-ji is worshiped as a temple that can ward off disease. Observe the temple architecture with its distinctive style and the National Treasure Buddhist statue. In front of Yoraku Gate, there is a restaurant called “Gin” where you can take a break and have some tea.

Toshodai-ji
Along with Heijo Palace and Yakushi-ji Temple, it is one of the 8 cultural properties of ancient Nara that have been collectively registered as the World Heritage site Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara. On the temple grounds, several National Treasure cultural properties can be viewed including the Golden Hall that boasts valuable Tenpyo Era architecture and a statue of Buddha from the same time period that has been considered to be a masterpiece.
