Travel plan for first timers in Kumano Kodo

Walk from Daimonzaka to Nachi Falls on the ancient roads known by the World Heritage site of “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”. Along with a tour of Nachi Taisha (Nachi Grand Shrine) which is one of the Kumano Sanzan (the Three Great Shrines of Kumano), you can also try out the fashion of the pilgrims from the Heian Era.

Daimonzaka Tea House

You can try on the clothing of people who had gone on their pilgrimages during the Heian Era and even take photographs right on the Kumano Kodo. Including the fitting of the clothes, photo sessions in front of the Meoto Sugi (Wedded Cedar Tree) and other things, the time spent will come to around 1 hour.

13:50 PM

Daimonzaka Slope

The scene of the mossy steps in the middle of a cedar forest is one of the famous spots along the Kumano Kodo. Daimonzaka is known for retaining the scenery of those days when the area was bustling with pilgrims heading to and from the shrines.

Tafukeoji Shrine

This is a stone shrine where pilgrims prayed and gave thanks during their trips. It’s a nice place to take a breather while admiring the beautiful cedar forest.

Kumano Nachi Taisha

Getting off the old road within the cedar forest will have you arrive at Nachi Taisha. Known as one of the Three Great Shrines of Kumano, it is the shrine that began primitive nature worship.

Nachi Seiganto-ji Temple

A temple adjacent to Nachi Taisha. From the temple grounds, you can see the three-storied pagoda and Nachi Falls at the same time. This view is famous as a scenic shot for photographers.

Nachi Falls

Tour Nachi Falls which is a symbol of nature worship in Kumano. You can view the wonderful scene of water falling straight down from its 133m height right in front of your eyes.
