About

Hachimantai’s beautiful seasonal changes

Hachimantai is a mountainous area at the northern end of the Ou Mountains straddling Iwate and Akita Prefectures. The area evokes the dynamism of the topography that was created a million years ago from volcanic activity with the wide highlands at 1614m, the peaks, and the marshes and wetlands that are scattered all about. At 40 degrees north latitude, the seasonal scenery that has been created from the climate and temperature is exceptional so that the changes in seasons are particularly sharp and beautiful when compared to the rest of Japan. The grand unobstructed area of lakes and marshes provides a dramatic view when the fall colors appear. And when the snow falls in December during the harsh cold of winter, a mystical field of frost-covered trees can be seen which is one of Japan’s foremost scenes.

Enjoy Hachimantai with all five senses by car or on foot

There are roads and walking trails at Hachimantai so that tourists can choose from either driving or hiking through the area. If driving through Hachimantai, take the Hachimantai Aspite Line or Hachimantai Jukai Line. An ideal drive through the grand natural environment of Hachimantai is exhilarating. In winter, snow is pushed back to either side of the road to form the Snow Corridor with 8m-high walls so the thrilling ride through here is also recommended. On the other hand, there are a variety of trekking courses as well for the hikers. You can walk through the highlands and wetlands which are filled with blooming mountain flora, and various groups of lakes and marshes formed from volcanic activity. The well-established walking trails are easy to navigate and since the summit can also be reached by car, it’s possible to select from which area to walk up depending on your stamina. At Hachimantai, whether it be through relaxing at an onsen or enjoying winter sports, there are plenty of ways to have fun through the blessings of nature.
