About

Historical buildings restored on its vast grounds

The Esashi district of Oshu City where the historical park Esashi Fujiwara Heritage Park is located is the birthplace of, Kiyohira Fujiwara, the first lord of the Northern Fujiwara clan which brought about the magnificent Tohoku Heian culture in the World Heritage site of Hiraizumi. The grand Esashi Fujiwara Heritage Park is a historical park with 120 buildings on its 20ha area that have been recreated based on careful background research from ancient times to the Middle Ages. Among the buildings are the remains of Muryokoin which was burned down by fire. The townscape of the Heian Era has been faithfully recreated with buildings such as the center of political power, Seicho, the Kyara-no-Gosho which was the residence for the third and fourth lords of the clan, and Kiyohira-kan, Kiyohira’s residence. There, you can experience the townscape and lifestyle of that time. The historical park, which was created as a location for the filming of historical dramas, while relating the great exploits of the Oshu-Fujiwara clan, is also a theme park where you can enjoy those early days and streets from that time.

Various attractions where you can experience the life of the Heian nobility

There are great attractions where you can experience the culture of those days. At the Junihitoe Experience, you can try on the multi-layered ceremonial kimono known as the Junihitoe that was the official clothing of the Heian nobility. There is also ceremonial old court dress for men and for children as well. Also, if you want to get a feel for the warriors of the Heian Era, the Bow & Arrow and Armor Experiences are also good. Anyone can try them out easily since the experiences are free. Furthermore, with activities such as the Clamshell Painting Experience where you can paint clamshells that were used in the Heian Era game of kaiawase, and a Heian-style meal, you will be able to savor the Heian culture to your heart’s content.
