Gunma 1 Day Itinerary (Tomioka Silk Mill & Takasaki)

Starting operations at the end of the 19th century, the mill manufactured world-renowned silk and can now be toured as a place that contributed to the Japanese silk industry. A Frenchman was behind its design which was realized by Japanese carpenters and artisans to create a structure merging Japan and the West.

Take a tour within the city of Takasaki in the afternoon. The area around Takasaki Station has flourished as a commercial district where you can choose from a light snack to a sit-down meal so having lunch here is convenient. After lunch, visit Takasaki Byakue Dai-Kannon (Takasaki White-Robed Great Kannon). Known as a symbol of Takasaki, the white statue of Kannon soaring into the sky is an impressive sight. It can be accessed by taking a bus or a taxi from the West Exit of Takasaki Station.

This is a shop specializing in the handicraft of daruma beloved as talismans making wishes come true while carrying the spirit of persistence through the ups and downs of life. Observe the production of these daruma by skilful artisans and even take part in painting them. Because they can also be purchased, they are recommended as souvenirs from Takasaki.

Visit the temple which has become famous for the countless number of daruma offered as the birthplace of the talisman. At serene Shourin-zan Daruma-dera, the sight of so many daruma on display is well known for its special view.
