Communication

What are the options for people who don't speak Japanese to get along day to day activities?

Hi Neeraj, I recommend taking notes of some  a quick "useful phrases" in Japanese that can help you get around.
I really recommend using this free downloadable guidebook: https://triplelights.com/tokyo-pdf-guidebook
It has maps, itineraries, cultural tips and some very useful phrases that you can use to everyday on your trip.

Also, have you seen this really cool T-Shirt with universal Icons that you can use to travel anywhere without having to speak? http://www.boredpanda.com/travel-shirt-iconspeak-world/
Even printing those icons and carrying on your backpack  could be useful to find what you need! Here's an image you could print: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/e9/60/42/e960424633ea4dcfd68d3b301c51ba29.jpg

Besides that, most places you go to, will have english signs or english menus to help, or in restaurants you can choose your food by looking at the food models in front of restaurants.
I recommend carrying google translate around with you as well. it may be super useful to ask something more complex, or even to take a picture of a Kanji and understand its meaning.

But mostly, don't worry so much, Japanese people tend to be super nice and helpful with tourists and I'm sure you'll be able to find help wherever you go.
