Kokuseki-ji Temple Somin-sai Festival

A festival with more than 1000 years of history, and also one of the Three Major Unusual Festivals of Japan

During the bitterly cold and snowy February, half-naked men cleanse themselves with cold water, light bonfires, and bravely compete to grab the “Somin bag” inside Kokuseki-ji Temple. It is an ancient festival that prays for good health and a good harvest.
